There are two significant guides to consult for your wildflower search. Both are in the Martinsburg and Shepherdstown Libraries:

  • Finding Wildflowers in the Washington-Baltimore Area by Cristol Fleming, Marion Blois Lobstein, and Barbara Tufty.  1995.  The Johns Hopkins University Press.
A terrific guide to wildflower trails and sites within a 50 mile radius of Washington D.C., including Washington Co., MD. This book will tell you where to look, how to get there, what to look for and the months when the wildflowers are in bloom.
  • Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide by Lawrence Newcomb. Little, Brown and Co. 1977.
Presents identification in a five-question system based on natural structural features. An explanation of how to use the system is given. Accurate black and white line drawings are used. There are a few pages illustrated in color.
